Elizabeth Anne Watkins

Elizabeth Anne Watkins, Ph.D., is an affiliate with the AI on the Ground research initiative at the Data & Society Research Institute. She studies how AI gets introduced into sociotechnical systems, with over six years of experience conducting sociological and policy research around technology implementation and governance. Dr. Watkins is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton, where she directs the Dialogues in AI and Work research group. She has a particular interest in the intersection of AI, work, and security, and in the knowledge and repair work demanded by opaque, brittle systems of biometrics and algorithmic recognition.

Dr. Watkins holds a doctorate from Columbia University, where she was supervised by David Stark, and a Master of Science from MIT. She’s previously worked at centers across academia and industry including Harvard Business School, MIT, Google, and various start-ups. Her research has been published in academic venues like the conferences on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES), Computer-Human Interaction (CHI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Algorithmic Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT), and the security conference USENIX, and has been featured in publications like WIRED, MIT Technology Review, and Harvard Business Review. Dr. Watkins is part of the Trustworthy AI Working Group at Mozilla, and has provided input on artificial intelligence policy at the UN.
