Alexander Macgillivray

Alexander Macgillivray is the Principal Deputy United States Chief Technology Officer, a post he also held for the last two years of the Obama Administration. Previously, he worked on the Biden transition team, and was part of the founding team at the Trust & Safety Professional Association and Alloy.us. He was also a board member at Creative Commons and an advisor to the Mozilla Tech Policy Fellows. He served on the board of Data & Society from 2018 to 2021.

Macgillivray served as Twitter’s general counsel, and as the company’s head of corporate development, public policy, communications, and trust and safety. Earlier, he was deputy general counsel at Google, where he created the product counsel team. He has served on the board of the Campaign for the Female Education (CAMFED) USA, was one of the early seminar voices at the Berkman Klein Center, and was certified as a first grade teacher by the State of New Jersey.

He is curious about law, policy, government, decision-making, the internet, algorithms, social justice, access to information, and the intersection of all of those.
